Third successful trip over to Dubai. 14 hours going and around 16 hours coming back. Emirates flies direct to Fort Lauderdale and its business class is hard to beat. Stayed at a hip/party scene hotel for this trip (Five Palm Jumeirah) which wasn't really my scene, but no shortage of action/nightlife if that's what you want. Dubai is a great city. Pleased to report I wasn't shot down by Iran and (hopefully) haven't brought back coronavirus to infect the USA. Kinda surprised there's no screening whatsoever at the airport coming back.

Slumming it in business class.

View at the pool. If you perverts look closely enough, you'll see one of the dozens of instagram wannabe models or, umm, professional ladies dancing around at the end of the pool. The eye candy was very nice, though I reckon a lot of it costs by the hour.

One of many non-healthy meals. I think this was some sort of spaghetti and king crab.

Our vehicles for "dune bashing" - the desert equivalent of redneck mudding here in the USA. Drive 1.5 hours or so outside the city, let air out of the tires, and grip your seat in fear as your maniac driver goes up and down the dunes in this Fast and Furious: Arab Drift adaptation. Lots of fun and thankfully no rolling over.

More dune bashing folks gathered on a tall dune.

It's amazing that Dubai/Abu Dhabi looked like this 20 - 30 years ago. Hell, the Palm island looked like this 10 years ago. The dunes change weekly so these guys are pretty much winging it each trip.

Best meal of the trip. I don't usually like lamb but this was excellent. Non-touristy, favored by locals. Eat on the floor with your hands.

View from the beach at the Andaz Palm hotel. Didn't stay here but looked nice.

The Dubai airport Emirates business class lounge is the largest airport lounge I have ever seen. It stretches on for damn near a quarter mile. Multiple food stations (Arabic, Asian, Western, Mediterranean, etc.), tons of seating, and my personal favorite champagne bar

bump - cant see images now - how hot was it?

I still see the images.

It was around 60 - 65 degrees at night and around 80 - 85 during the day.

Last time we went was in June and it was 118 degrees when we landed at 9pm.

shoot those hotels are more affordable than i figured they'd be

don't think i'd be able to swing it for business though, that'd probably kill my vacation budget for 3 or 4 years

though i do have 100k+ UR points laying around...

Dubai is on my list, pictures look pretty cool. Emirates business is so lovely, wife and I flew it to Athens a few years ago. I flew economy on Emirates a few years before that and it was still dramatically better than domestic economy.

Emirates is pretty terrible with points unless you have a big stash of Japan Airlines or Alaska miles. Points do xfer from AmEx and I think Citi, but booking an Emir as tes flight using Emirates points is rarely worth it. It's like 250,000 points + around $1700 in taxes/fuel surcharges.

Dang, that's looks fabulous! Awesome pics! That's first class trip from beginning to the end. I've heard great things about Dubai. I was sitting on a plane next to US contractor who worked in Dubai and he was telling me how awesome it was if you have money. He said I had to visit at least once to see how ridiculous bling bling the city was. Unfortunately, I travel on a budget so I would be staying in the slums with the homeless. How is Dubai for low budget traveler? I imagine not too many backpackers travel to Dubai.

Dubai gets a lot of hate for being so fake, but when I went there (and Abu Dhabi) in the early 90s, I thought it was cool as hell. Unfortunately I wasn't lugging a camera around, so no pictures :(.

It isn't the last place on earth I'd want to go, but I'd be into my 3rd or 4th lifetime before I got to it.

Looks cool, I'd probably sunburn in like 2 minutes there though. I don't know how those people wear full body coverings either that must be insane hot. I guess you pick between sunburning or drowning in your own sweat lol.

Yeah, Dubai's changed a bit since the 90's.

I saw a documentary on when they originally started out. What a phenomenal vision...a dry patch of desert into one of the world's richest, most advanced cities in the world. Someone has a progression-picture video starting in the 50's up on Youtube:

If i had to go to the Middle East it'd be Oman, Dubai feels like a more crooked version of Vegas, and i don't have any inclination to visit that place either

Oil money can buy you a lot of luxury even in a desert. If you want to be bummed out watch a documentary on how Dubai was built. Workers were treated like shit. Still look like an interesting place to visit for a few days.

Hey @Jeeebus how much were the tickets?

That sums it up quite well. Well after I've done Europe, a bunch of Asia, a bunch of Central and South America and Africa and other places in the middle east and of course NZ and the Aussies.
