I beleive this is the biggest change since 7.

This version does not include the video capture card. (Probably what the asterisks are) There are deluxe versions that include the firewire or analogue card.

I've got V7, and from the user forums, the difference is that you don't need Express to write to DVD/CD any more, and the MPEG2 encoder was allegedly improved. From the sample I saw, it's still nowhere as good as TMPGENC for making MPEG2 video.

For making a decently edited video with transitions, title, soundtrack, it's not bad...

Studio 7 was great, but couldn't create disks
Studio 8 is great, can create VCD, DVD, does slo-mo, has more effects, improved rendering BUT...it crashes more than any other software I've ever owned, even after applying the latest 8.13 patch. Go to the pinnacle website forums and look at the "make disc" forums and you'll see I'm not the only one.

Tonight I tried using the software that came with my Sony burner - MyDVD and ShowBiz but they don't have anywhere near the features of Studio (example: you can only set a chapter point when capturing the video from your camera).

Icing on the cake: I paid $60 for the upgrade to 8 as part of a special deal to their existing customers! I feel so special.

Very intuitive and fact filled post. You have enlightened us all. Now I suppose you will tell us that Brand X (that just happens to cost about $300) is a much better product.

Thanks for the heads up. I use Studio 7 and Pinnacle Express and like them both. Looks like I won't be upgrading any time soon unless it's free after rebate.

I don't know what a better product is for under $50 as a matter of fact I don't know of a better product for under $300. Basically, you get what you pay for. You pay very little for this, so don't expect very much because it sucks.
