Baby left in car while mom visits inmate in jail.

A Baldwin County woman who was visiting the county jail is now being held there after authorities found she was under the influence of drugs at the time and had left her baby alone in the car, the sheriff's department reported today.

Sheriff's deputies arrested Penny Nicole Hume, 21, of Robertsdale and charged her with endangering the welfare of a child, and possession of a controlled substance.

According the sheriff's department, Hume had left the 6-month-old child in the car while she went inside the corrections center to visit an inmate. The child was removed by a deputy unharmed after about 10-15 minutes and the mother was arrested when she came back to the vehicle, the department said.

Since she was under the influence, it was a good call on the deputy, but other than that she should have gotten a warning. 15 is long but not for arresting.

She left a 6 month old infant alone in a car for 15 minutes! If that isn't gross negligence, then I don't know what is. :roll:

The article does not state how long the mother stayed in the jail. The deputy removed the baby after 10-15 min.

IMO she should be arrested for leaving her baby in the car.

You wouldn't think it, but in quite a few states the act of leaving a child in a car isn't illegal at all. Here is a non-profit orgs map that shows which states have laws, which have legislation in progress etc...from what I am reading the "white" states on the map have neither a law present, nor is there one in the process of being approved

I have 2 kids myself, and the only time they are ever left in the car when I am not in it is when I am right next to it (pumping gas)...if I so much as walk into the gas station to pay they come with me. We recently had a radio personality advocate (in cars where the keys and child are both left in the car) moving the car to a different parking place and waiting for the "parent" to come out and confront them about it. Thats a drastic measure, but something has to be done...to me leaving a child in the car is pure laziness

seriously. i never leave mine in the car if im not standing beside it.

i was out with my family once grabbing a burger, sitting at a booth, and this lady comes in with her baby in one of those infant car seats that you can carry around. she sets her kid on a booth seat near the back of the place, where she *can not* see the child and goes up front to order.

im stunned as she walks away....and shes not 5 steps gone when the kid, who had been crying, starts kicking its feet and the carrier starts to fall *off the seat* I grabbed it before it fell over...and got her attention.

the bitch looked at me funny, didnt say a word, and carried the kid up and put it on the floor beside her while she ordered.
