Baby Found Dead in Dishwasher

An 18-month-old boy was found dead inside the dishwasher at his family?s home in Romance, Arkansas.
Authorities in White County say the child?s death was likely caused by heat exposure. They think it was an accident.

The baby?s 13-year-old brother found him.

?The child walked out of the room and noticed that his little brother wasn?t there,? said Chief Deputy Jeremy Clark, ?(he) heard the dishwasher on, found that odd, and the baby?s blanket was laying in front of the dishwasher.?

Investigators say the dishwasher, a Maytag, automatically starts when the door is closed.

At the time of the accident, the boys? father was sleeping and their mother was at work.

That poor baby....

hard to believe indeed

how does a baby that young close the dishwasher door behind himself?

Mine is spring-loaded - I guess to assist in closing the door. I don't think it's strong enough to lift a baby. But, if the kid crawled mostly in, and then the door shut, I could believe that...

That's what I was thinking. Even _if_ Maytag was preprogrammed to start automatically (on an empty dishwasher?), and the 18 months baby did crawl inside and fit, he had to not only close is tight, but latch it, or have the latch click in, otherwise the dishwasher wouldn't start.

Something's too fishy here.

how would the dish washer know there are dishes inside?

I think newer dishwashers have electronic latches. Ours isn't like the old style where you had to physically move a latch handle. On this one you close the door and it latches.

🙁

It reminded me of Zach Braff's character in Garden State.
"It's really amazing how much of my life has been determined by a quarter-inch piece of plastic." (broken dishwasher latch/freak accident involving his mother)

our dishwasher has no latch and it can be programmed to auto start. Whatever the case this is so sad, Dishwasher water is like 150 degrees I can't imagine the pain from dying like this. 18 months too 🙁

Bolded the problem area.

If the father had been doing his duty and properly supervising the child, this would never have happened.

It's absolutely tragic and it makes me very sad indeed.

Wow, you sure are quick to judge. We don't even know what happened before this incident. Maybe he took the kids out to the park and fell asleep on the couch when they got home, or maybe they were watching TV and the guy fell asleep. Seriously you are judging this guy without even knowing his situation.

Agreed.

I must say, it's very easy to judge parents when you are not one yourself. Weird (and occasionally tragic) stuff happens all the time when kids are in a house.

Something is definitely fishy about this;

1. I have never heard of a dish washer that automaticaly starts everytime it is closed, that makes NO sense. It would need to be programed first.
2. How would the baby open the door to the dishwasher?
3. If the door was already open, how would the baby close the door?
4. Someone suggested that maybe the door has springs in it. If the door has springs in it to close it, why would it be open? This then brings me back to question #2.

even if he fell asleep, while watching the tv, or after a workout at park or whatever, it was his responsibility as the only parent in the house at that time to make sure, the baby was in the cradle or safely tucked in somewhere.

being tired is no excuse, its like saying i was stoned!

still very sad indeed 🙁
