Baby delivery costs $1 million

John Kan and Rachel Evans had taken out travel insurance and extra cover for Evans' pregnancy without realizing the policy would not cover birth or the baby.

They were about to return to Australia after their B.C. vacation when Evans went into premature labour at the airport.

Australian media reports the couple negotiated a payment plan with the hospital at about $300 a month, which would take 278 years to pay off.

So what are the lessons here?

1) Insurance not worth the ink on the paper

2) Canada health care more expensive than the U.S. or would the bill be even higher if born in the U.S.?

3) Don't have babies?

What was she doing on a flight anyway... How "premature" was it. I'm pretty sure my wife's doctor said no travel after 8ish months.

Guess everything is more expensive for Australians, not just video games.

"Piper Kan stayed in the neo-natal ward of the B.C. Women’s Hospital and Health Centre for three months and the bill ended up being about one-million dollars."

She was in the hospital for 3 months! That would cost more than 1 million in the US, no?

Technically the delivery didn't cost a million. It's was the 3 month NICU stay that did.

So what happens in situations like this? Are the parents driven into poverty for the rest of their lives? Or does the hospital settle on some smaller amount?

Since the parents probably won't live 278 years, I'd say it's been settled.

only good thing this is rare. most people have more common sense and have the ability to read.

it really depends. they can talk to the hospital and odds are will be knocked down.Since its in the news it will be erased.

IMHO civilized nations should mandate coverage exchanges while traveling -- the Canadian government should pay the cost of citizens needing care in Oz or the US, while private insurance companies in those countries should be forced to reimburse care in Canada.

I am confused, I thought you and the rest of the single payer crowd hold that system in high regard for keeping costs down? In the US a baby born costs right around 15-17K :D
