NEW YORK — Baby carrot farmers are launching a campaign that pitches the little, orange, crunchy snacks as daring, fun and naughty — just like junk food.
A group of 50 producers hopes the 'Eat 'Em Like Junk Food' effort starting next week will double the $1 billion market in two or three years.

The goal is to get people to think of baby carrots as a brand they can get excited about — not just a plain, old vegetable. A website, www.babycarrots.com, features metal music and deep male voices chanting "Baby. Carrots. Extreme." On social networking site Twitter, the campaign's account suggests people eat them "like there's no tomorrow (maybe there won't be...)"

"This campaign is about turning baby carrots into a brand," said Jeff Dunn, CEO of Bolthouse Farms, the nation's top baby carrot producer with 50 percent of the market, and the most to gain if the market grows. "We think ultimately long-term here we're going to turn it into a very vital brand in the mind of consumers.

The plan begins in Cincinnati and Syracuse, N.Y., and will take at least a year to go national.

But carrot eaters around the country will get a taste of baby carrots' attempt at attitude with Scarrots next month. The Halloween version of baby carrots will come in spooky packaging and have glow-in-the-dark temporary tattoos, ideal for giving out to trick-or-treaters, Dunn said.

The marketing campaign by Crispin Porter + Bogusky, known for its edgy advertising of Burger King and Old Navy, will cost about $25 million.

i like them
but in cycles
if we buy the 3 lb bag, half of them end up in the garbage
so i prefer to buy the 1 lb bag and not waste them too much

Just like those mini-candy bars somehow make you want to eat more of them as well.

Not really.

But I buy and eat a lot from the regular bags, anyway.

I love carrots. Good snack to nibble on, and they balance out the more acidic foods/drinks I consume.

These are baby carrots:
you are right. they look like what they call "baby cut" carrots. you can tell a true baby carrot from a big one that's just been shaved down.

Baby carrots are so much better than baby cut carrots. Sadly, they're also more expensive and harder to find.

These baby carrots are really full grown carrots that have been cut into 2" pieces and smoothed and shaped to look like baby carrots, the majority of which would have been thrown away as culls and few to cattle or just destroyed. In the late 1980's Mike Yurosek a farmer in California got tired of seeing 400 tons of carrots a day being discarded and came up with a way to shape and form them into what look like baby carrots. The rest is an American success story with raw baby carrots making up 1/3 of the sales of fresh raw carrots and are one of the top vegetables consumed in the US.

more? mo i eat ZERO to begin with. baby carrots (which are fake as people have pointed out) have no flavor compared to a real carrot and are a waste of money

I'll buy a bag of them occasionally. Good snack but I hate the added costs associated with it. I could get a regular bag of normal carrots for less. :(

it's the convenience that costs ya. they are already washed, ready to pop in your mouth. as compared to an actual carrot that you have to peel, rinse, cut.

no one seems to want to answer the question in the OP. they are putting these carrots in fancy little bags and comparing them to junk food. i don't know that this marketing scheme will work.

I think the packaging's clever, and will get them some more sales. I like baby carrots of both varieties, but I won't buy them more if they're in a junk food bag.

Unless their cooked, I won't eat them. "Real" carrots are better for cooking. So I do not support this campaign.

I like the kind that come in a little tub packed with water. Can't stand dried out carrots.

Carrots in general are so dirt cheap it seems silly to me to complain much about the cost either way. I've seen 1lb of baby carrots at Aldi for 50 cents. I usually get a nice big 5lb bag at Costco. I love baby carrots

I think that this campaign is super effective for kids. When you're in the lunchroom and everyone is pulling out exciting, colorful bags of "junk food," the kid won't feel bad whipping out a "cool looking" bag of carrots that Mom just packed.

Trust me, it's all in the packaging for kids. Nothing begs for the garbage faster than a boring zip-lock baggie of slightly dry baby carrots staring at a 6 year old.
