Babies and phones don't mix

My wife just called me to say that two police officers showed up at our door asking about a 911 call from our phone. Apparently, my daughter was playing with the cordless phone and hit the right sequence of buttons somehow.

I hope we don't get a bill for the officer's time. :laugh:

On the up side, it's good to know that they response to all 911 calls even the ones where the person doesn't say anything. Hopefully it didn't deter them from dealing with more important work.

I did it once. I used to live in area code 914 and when I was maybe 14 I misdialed 911 and immediately hung up. 10 minutes later a cop showed up at my front door asking about a 911 call. I explained and apologized but for some reason the cop just stood there glaring at me. It's the only time I've ever shut the door in someones face .

Oddly enough the "saftey" on our cordless phone allows you to dial 911 when all other buttons are locked out!

Usually 911 calls back to confirm. Our oldest child took the phone downstairs and did this so we missed the call back and we got an officer at the door.

Our middle child did it once and we got the call back so no problem. Then another time without our knowledge he called 911 and said "There's a fire on Main Street" I believe repeating a stupid fire saftey commercial. Sirens yep. I was on a business call when 911 tried to call back and did not switch over in time, so we got an officer at the door who gave us a written warning.

No trouble since then. The youngest does not play with the phone.

If she was playing with the phone without my wife realizing it, she probably left the phone on and nobody could call back.

I have friends accidently call 911 when trying to call me. The reason being is my actuall phone number is 2 digits off from the 911 trunk number for my telephones number block. If you transpose 2 numbers, wallah, you get Davidson County 911. They don't know you didn't actually dial 911, and will question you repeatedly and or call back.

aww, that's forgivable. If she calls back because she thought the officer was cute and wanted his number then she should be arrested though...

My wife gave her old cell phone to my 4 year old...battery was dead (so she thought), sim chip had been removed, etc.

He comes in one day and says, "Mom, my friend Susan needs to talk to you" and hands her the phone. Puzzled, she says "hello?" and talks to the 911 operator whom he had managed to dial. Apparently he found the old charger and got enough life back in it to place the call.

That happened to us and according to the dispatcher this happens all the time. Partly due to the prevelence of the 911 message in kids shows and partly by accident. Most of the time with toddlers the line is left open or the call back gets a busy signal and they have to respond. Same thing happened once with our house alarm. While waiting for the call from the monitoring station a local unit stopped by the house.

You already did... and so did I... and so did your neighbor (providing s/he is not illegal)... and so did every other tax-paying citizen.

can't find it now but there was a thready about a story of a woman who called 911 to ask the operator to get the number of the officer who just visited her so she can get his name and nubmer because he was cute. He came back and arrested for misusing the emergency line.
