B&W iPaq?

I'm looking into a new PDA and dont want to spend too much cash. I was wondering what people's opinions of this thing are... i know they go for under $200 so its way cheaper than the regular iPaq. Of course, I know that the screen is going to suck (at least compared to the regular ipaq) but its way cheap and fits my wallet nicely.

I just got one two weeks ago. I really like it, with the exception that I have been unable to sync it with my PC.

The backlighting is "ok". Since I haven't been able to sync (on the phone with Compaq Tech Support right now), I haven't been able to get any games.

Hey John, what happens when you try to sync it?

<< Also, did it come w/ a cradle to sync? Or did you have to spring for that one w/ extra cash... >>

All iPAQs come with a cradle.

I got my 3150 for $157 off ebay. No, it doesn't come with a cradle, but rather a USB cable.

See here for my sync problems. Compaq Tech Support wasn't much help. Pretty much just blamed it on my "home built" setup and having too many USB devices. 😕

i have the b/w ipaq and i miss my color one and the back light is just like a palms no cradle just a cable but the battery life is good

hrmm... noticed that the new Sony Clie PEG-s320 is only $199... tough choice on this one... anyone have any advice? Not trying to do the whole PocetPC v. PalmOS thing either...

IMHO, you'd be better off with a Pocket PC. More built in software, more capabilities. Plus the Pocket PC has a real file system 🙂 If you want reviews of the different PDAs, I suggest you check out PDABuzz.com

Well Hans, that pretty much depends on what you want to use it for. If all you want is the features of the Palm OS (contacts, memos, calendar, etc..), then the Clio or Visor would be a much better option.

But if you crave the added features of the PocketPC (Excel, Word, media, etc...), then it's the better option.

yea, I think I want more features... I've been thinking about it for a while... I think the H3150 is a better deal for my needs than a Palm device..

<edit>
I've read some reviews of the iPaq and lots of people quote their problems w/ the limited ram (16mb) and how it limits what you can do with the device. Anyone see any other problems w/ it?
</edit>

The limited RAM can be overcome with a Compact Flash sleeve and card. Of course that increases the size a bit, but not by an unacceptable amount. In some regards, the sleeve makes the PDA easier to hold.

Sorry to say it, but I'm more than a little biased towards Pocket PC. I'll note that in my opinion from now on 🙂

<< yes, but what if I didnt want the sleeve on there.. would 16mb be unusable or is it OK for most things... >>

What are "most things"? First off, you need to remember that the PPC uses the RAM both for storage and for actively running programs. You can count on dedicating at least 4 MB to actively running programs, so that leaves you with 12 MB of storage space. If you're just carrying around a few documents and some "normal" apps (ie a photo editor, some Office-type tools, a few light games, and some utiltiies) then you'll be fine. But you won't really be able to take advantage of MP3s or big games like Doom.

yea I figured games would kinda suck on it... but I am just curious about standard PIM stuff plus a few extras.. nothing too big.

Then 16MB should be just fine.
