From what I can tell it will be like DirectX 10 and 11. To my knowledge, DirectX 10 cards "support" DirectX 11 games, they just don't use the features of DirectX 11. So current DirectX 11 cards will "support" DirectX 12 games in a similar sense, while not using the additional features of DirectX 12.

I would hope DX12 will have support for a new hardware feature set in yet to be released hardware. If it's only about better efficiency then fail on the part of Microsoft. And AMD/Nvidia as they collaborate with MS on implementing this stuff.

Am I reading this correct, that you expect a unique feature set for future cards or else it is a fail? And what if DX12 improves performance on older cards through the new API...

Crysis 3 is DX11 and can't be played with DX10(and 10.1) GPUs as far as I know.

and DX11 was not a drastic change from DX10, DX12 probably is?

Unique is not the correct word. The next major hardware iteration from AMD/NV would hopefully be supported by DX12. DX11 is 7 years old. Seeing it takes MS forever between major revisions of DX I'm expecting DX12 to have this support.

If DX12 is not about exposing new hardware then Mantle will have a huge, huge advantage.
