Out of curiosity - why is solid state needed or what advantages are there in a solid state relay? (I'm guessing no moving parts = more reliable)

Try a major electrical supply store, where the electricians shop. Not Lowes or Home Depot.

Lots of advantage particularly on the "coil" power. (no potentially damaging spikes due to induction, no bounce, immunity to false armature actuation in areas of high magnetic flux, etc.)

They are silent as well and you have a much broader range of "pull in" aka activation current requirements.

You might have to check around for small electronics shops, though they might be tough to find.
There's a little hole-in-the-wall place near me - from the road, there's no sign of it. It's around the back of some kind of run-down industrial building. But they stock a big rack of Jameco parts, and they have a better component selection than Radio Shack. I don't even recall seeing any signs indicating the name of the place.

Other than that, you're probably going to be buying online. Mouser, Digikey, Newark - they've probably got what you need.

What sort of thing are you switching with it?

Grainger. They are the 7-11 of electrical hardware. They have EVERYTHING but its a little pricey. Also be prepeared to bring a business license because they generally dont sell to those who dont have an account.

isn't he looking for a big transistor?

(in which case you'd be hitting digikey and not mcmaster, but you want a B&M and I can't think of anyone that would have them)

If you're in LA, Allelectronics has a store and they may have more in stock walking in than they show online.

In Dallas, try Tanner Electronics.

I'd hit up Digikey or Mouser. USPS first class mail and it'll be there in ~2-3 days.

If you're really desperate hit up a hvac/electrician's supply place for a temporary contactor or relay.
