Anyone know what the laws are for the possession of a firearm in AZ? What can you legally buy at age 19?

Nothing, including AZ's fact sheet on the NRA website saws anything about the age for purchasing.

My thought was that an assault rifle was similar to a semiautomatic rifle, but with a shorter barrell? I most likely am wrong thoguh.

I actually have 2 reasons for not getting just a handgun though:
-have to be 21 (I am 18)
-have what is called an essential tremor, I could not hit the broad side of a barn if more than 5 feet away.

It's generally defined (by law) as any rifle that can take a detatchable magazine. In actual practice it doesn't mean jack.
The libs like to target the evil, mean, black ones.

lol, its not really that bad, but I have to have a two handed grip (I can just imagine the sig lines I am going to get after this) in order to have (aww crap) a decent aim. Handguns just do not work well.
Then again, maybe I can get body armor and just carry around a grenade!

The term "assault rifle" means nothing.
The main difference between your average hunting rifle and so called "assault rifle" is pure aesthetics.
Case in point:
Ruger's Mini14 Ranch Rifle. As sold, it looks like your every day hunting rifle...
If you replace the classic wood stock with a pistol grip retractable shoulder stock, add a flash suppressor and a bayonet mount, you now have an illegal assault rifle. You have not changed the mechanics of the weapon one bit, only the looks.
In other words, the "assault rifle" ban is about as silly as the rumored Canadian car mod ban. It's not a ban on dangerous weapons, but a ban on scary looking weapons. Why is this? Because a ban that went any further and addressed any actual mechanics of the guns would have been a ban on the majority of semi-auto hunting rifles in the US.
That's right, folks, there is no such thing as an "assault rifle." There are merely "scaring looking" versions of normal semi-auto rifles most often used for hunting either large, or small game.
Oh, and DBA, if you have muscle control problems caused by tremors, you probably don't need to be handling firearms. Any firearms. Not even a shotgun is going to have a wide enough spread at the close range you'd be using it at in home defence to improve your aim. An 18.5" barrel shotgun only has a <3" spread at 15 feet. Not nearly enough to improve your aim any.
