Stolen from Fark...

Link

Given how volatile Iran was after the election, I can't imagine anything but a small civil war happening, as the hard-liners have lost their "moral" ground and only have the asshat member's only jacket wearing achmadouchebag.

If he dies it is expected that immediately a bloody clash will
develop between the powers behind Rafsanjani, who will immediately
claim temporary religious authority and overall control, and the
powers behind Achmadinejad who will scramble in order to regain
control and ensure their survival.

UPDATE (Wednesday Oct 14th): According to a bulletin from the Greens (Moussavi/Karroubi et al), there are widespread rumors in the Tehran Bazaar that Khamenei has died. The Greens say they cannot confirm it, but that there is an ?abnormal atmosphere? in the streets, which almost certainly means there are more security people than usual.

The bazaar will apparently be closed tomorrow, and perhaps Friday as well, pending developments.

Leeden is a hardcore neocon but he is very well connected into the goings on of Iran also (or so I read).

Theologies are essentially just different schools of metaphysical philosophy. Of course many religious people fixate on nonsensical literal interpretations of what is inherently metaphorical analysis, and some exploit such misguided faith to control the masses, but there is much to learn from the religions of the world if one cares to take more than a superficial look at them.

Society has not advanced far enough mentally to completely rid of "man in the sky" bullshit.

I hate to see this kind of post, mike. It reflects poorly on you. I don't see how a person who may have a completely goofy opinion on one subject has to be off on all subjects. I saw nothing in his post that he should be prevented from saying. What makes you so intolerant that you want him to go away. What is the source of your pique. I think if you look hard enough you will find that somehow, something you believe is threatened by his existence.

Huh, if true this could get quite interesting. The green revolution could take a new turn.

Meet the new boss, same as the....

You know the rest.

If this is true, there's really no reason to get excited, they'll just replace him with someone equally backwards and medieval. It's not like there's any real old vs new guard struggle at the very top, so this will be meaningless.

Actually, there is, and it doesn't even have much to do with the recent election.

There are always power struggles at the very top in Iran -- it's like a more religious version of the f'n mafia.

Anyone on deck to stop the nuclear program, stop threatening Israel, or stop funding terrorists? Nope to all three.

So from our standpoint whatever "change" takes place is meaningless. Any chance of real reform came and passed over the summer.

My persian co-worker who has family there and follows the politics there pretty closely says if he's dead = most likely massive bloodshed.

You can't say that for certain. I agree that it's not advisable to overstate the hopes for improvement, but the theocracy will have a hard time finding a replacement with the credibility of Khamenei. The reduced level of legitimacy will erode public support for the regime somewhat in all probability. I don't think this will be the roots of a revolution or anything of that magnitude, but we'll all have to wait and see.

Something anyone interested in Iran should watch : Rick Steve's Iran, available on Hulu. Fascinating stuff.

Just the thing we need in a nation arming itself with nuclear weapons.

So in English religion is basically a bunch of shit that people use to brainwash others but different forms of religion can prove interesting to study them. ;)

Better now before they actually have nuclear weapons.

If there is violence, there's no telling how deep it becomes and how long it lasts.

Governments have used religion as a tool. Take it away, and they will find another. History has proven this.
