It's actually really easy to figure out from the Latin roots, assuming you can guess "ay" is a meaningless exclamation. Dios > deo (think "diety"), mio > mea (as in "mea culpa"). Works fairly often for romance languages or big words... in French: mon dieu, in Italian: mio dio. See the similarities?
