I have an AXP 3200 right now, and I'm wondering if I'll see any real performance increase by going to an A64 3200? My kids box is a socket 754 2800, and it doesn't seem to be any faster at all, though it does get a little better frame rates playing games.
So is it worth it? Or is it really just a step sidways?

As far as gaming goes, it depends a lot on the game. I did this upgrade about a year ago and some things (UT2004) got a hefty performance boost while others (Doom 3, Far Cry) were almost the same as they used to be.

Not that I am a big fan of this other site, but the CPU charts show a pretty big improvement in performance going from an Athlon xp 3200 to an Athlon 64 3200. It might be worth checking the charts out.

I think it's much faster.. everything is really really snappy under AMD64. I go over to my sons A-XP @ 2600Mhz and can feel the difference almost immediatly just opening an file explorer window. Then you can OC wayyy past 2.0 ghz to 2.4 pretty easy which means 3800.. Now look at this review where both Axp 3200 and AMD 64 3800 is there

Thanks for the info and links. I know A64's bench faster, it's the "feel" that I was wondering about. So if it feels faster to you gents, it prolly will to me as well.

Thanks again.

Well an Athlon XP 3200+ actually beats a Athlon 64 3200+ in arithmetic tests so in terms of raw power, they aren't too different . . . but as far as gaming performance is considered, an Athlon 64 would stap around an XP a little bit . . . and the 90mm 939 Athlon 64 should OC a better as well . . .

Athlon XP 3200+ only beats A64 3200+ in about one test in a zillion (slight over exageration). Everything bar a couple of tests is much faster with A64 - things like file compressing in WinRAR for example are miles faster. Most encoding tests are a little faster too with A64, but less noticable. The main thing about A64 is gaming performance: the S754 A64 2800+ will beat an XP 3200+ in games, and something like a S939 A64 3200+ will be considerably faster.

That being said though, is it worth paying out for a whole new CPU/Motherboard/Possibly Graphics too, for that gain anyway? If you can squeeze a bit more time out of your XP 3200+, it may be worth waiting for a bigger leap, for example when the 3500+ models become cheaper. If you consider overclocking straightaway, then it would be well worth paying out for. Depends what else you have in your 'rig' really.
