An opportunity has arisen to purchase two AXP 2000 SFF machines for 80 dollars each shipped, which is a fairly cheap price for a complete system(no monitor). I've also see a few P4 based system ranging from 1.7Ghz to 2.0 and 2.26Ghz.

If memory serves, the Athlons of the day spanked the Willamette P4s all over the place, and gave the 2Ghz P4s a run for their money as well. But Seti@home isn't a benchmark I recall.

What sort of performance would these old machines yield in Seti, would it even be worth my effort?

Edit - Well, someone bought the AXP systems. Just the P4 1.7Ghz systems for a bit too much than I want to spend, 160 to 165. They are newer overall systems than the AXP boxes were though, still a bit pricey for me.

As you mentioned too ,I seem to recall that an XP 2000 (1.67GHz) would beat a P4 2GHz @ S@H1 .

If you look here at a benchmark database it'll give you a good idea.
Though bear in mind that this is for S@H classic ,whether the advantage of the XP over the P4 changed at all with S@H2 (BOINC) I don't know.

Here's another SETI classic benchmark database from TLC.
Unfortunatly the latest table which was compiled by Reolof seems to of been lost when his SETISpy site was taken down some while after his death :(

[edit]
Scratch that ,I've found that almost the entire SETIspy website has been archived :),here & his Top 200 benchmarks are here
Ok probably more info than you needed but it was good to find that out ;)
