Seems from my readings that Athlon AXIA stepping/core is the best option with regards to bang for da bucks Some questions about it though:

Given: Motherboard - ASUS A7M266 / 256 Crucial DDR RAM

1) How would you know if the proc ur getting is an AXIA?
2) Are all 1.33GHZ Athlons of AXIA core?
3) What are the advantage/disadvantages between the ff:

1GHZ 200FSB AXIA overclocked to 1.4GHZ
1GHZ 266FSB AXIA overclocked to 1.4GHZ

1.2GHZ 200FSB AXIA overclocked to 1.4GHZ
1.2GHZ 266FSB AXIA overclocked to 1.4GHZ

1.3GHZ 200FSB AXIA overclocked to 1.4GHZ
1.33GHZ 266FSB AXIA overclocked to 1.4GHZ

4) Would you recommend an overclocked system if i was to leave the computer on 24/7?

5) What Heatsink / Fan would you recommend for the Asus A7M266?

Here's my setup, and I highly recommend doing the same thing:

Iwill kk266 ($130 delivered from www.newegg.com)
AMD AXIA 1ghz 266mhz fsb (from www.atacom.com, $185 delivered)

That's a GREAT setup, and I coupled it with a ThermoEngine and have been VERY pleasantly surprised... I get 1.47ghz out of mine and it stays barely lukewarm to the touch (the heatsink, that is :))

Methusela, does your system crash if you leave it on for a long time running Prime 95, RC5, Seti@Home, ect.?

Methusela,
I have an IWIL kk266 and 1 ghz AXIA (200FSB) @1.33 (10 x133). I wouldn't mind pushing it over 1.4- can you give me more details about your settings so I can try to duplicate? Like voltage and anything else I can tweak? Also, can you guide me a little on the memory settings in the BIOS- they are completely unintuitive to me. I have 128 MB Samsung CL3 RAM. For some reason, my brain refuses to understand the #-#-# settings and the relation between the # and the outcome. Also I don't have 4Way interleave on- what does that do? What's hte risk of frying something if I turn it on?
Sorry - I prob shld have started a new thread for thse questions :(
Thanks

1) You only know the cpu you're getting is AXIA either by asking the sales people or reading that a store is specifically selling Athlons with the AXIA core.
2) no idea
3) The only advantage to all of those is that by running a 266FSB/133FSB you're getting a lot of extra memory bandwidth and performance out of your motherboard. Basically if you get a new CPU, either buy the C version (266FSB) or unlock a B version with a reasonable default multiplier and voltage.

If you're going to be running a critical server, I would not run an overclocked machine as a server. You'd want a machine that's as stable as possible and even if it's "100%" stable overclocked you still are generating more heat than you would in a non-overclocked or underclocked situation.

But personally if it's not a business critical server I'd run it overclocked if it was pretty stable. :)

Swanny:

Yes, it runs Seti@home and Prime 95 endlessly with no problems. I had Prime 95 running when the cpu was set at 1525mhz, but it had rounding errors after about an hour or so... everything else ran fine, however =)

As for my settings,

I'm currently running an Iwill kk266... but you can see my settings at the link in my sig, or here.

If you need more info just ask, k? I have PM turned on, so use that if it doesn't require a whole forum post =]
