the other day i noticed my computer all of a sudden became super sluggish and then bam, it just froze. had to press reset to reboot but no go. reset again and finally windoze comes up but takes longer than usually. when i checked my drives, 2 of my logicals were gone. one was my mp3 drive and another had a few movies i havent had time to burn to cds yet.

proceeded to shutdown, checked all cables, checked BIOS but still no driving showing up. swapped into another computer, nothing. wrapped the sucker up in plastic wrap and left it overnight in the freezer. tested once more this morning but same story so giving up now. ahhh...17gigs of mp3s gone. can someone say "backup"?

oh well...i'll try to avoid Western Digitals next time. Maxtors havent failed on me yet. oh yea the HD is out of warranty, of course...seems they fail once they're out of warranty, go figure.

I've had two Maxtor drives fail on me and never a bad Western Digital, it's all about luck of the draw.

Yep, I've had five Maxtors die on me, you don't see me badmouthing Maxtors as garbage.

I have a small business building computers out of my home. I've built alot of computers over the last 7 years and have used Maxtor, Western Digital, IBM/Hitachi, Fujitsu and Seagate. I've returned a few of all of these manufacturers, but I can not say I've had problems with more of one brand over another. I've been lucky in the fact that I've had some drives replaced by the manufacturer that were out of warranty.

But I think it is like "jdogg707" said, "it's all about luck of the draw."

I've had 2 western digitals go bad on me, but I just RMA'd them and at this time I have 6 western digital drives in my 3 computers...

I also have a maxtor and quantum hard drive, but so far I haven't had any failures from those...

I've worked on a lot of hard drives, and I've seen everything from maxtor, western digital and all the way to samsung go bad... it's just the luck of the draw.

I've had 2 of my 5 Seagate Baracuda V's go bad.
I'll keep on using them though because they're quiet.

I hate it when people rag on HDD manufactures for every dead brand A HDD there are dead Brand B's and C's. They are mechanical moving parts they will break down and you will likely never know when. I have had seagate, WD, and Maxtors in my main rig none of them have ever died I have just moved on to greener pastures I have very good ventalation for my HDD's and I think that helps them quite a bit. I know one day I will ahve a drive die but even after that I will still buy HDD's from the manufacture its just the luck of the draw.

It can suck to lose data but thats what backuping up is for as well as warrenty's.

yeah...my SEs have been cranking 24/7 for nearly 7 straight months (though twice i had to turn off the pc)

if they break, i don't care 😉

though i have noticed that until they heat up they are really loud, but that is prolly b/c its been used to the eat for so long 😉

you try running XP Recovery Console and using chkdsk and fixboot, I had a Quantum and a WD both magically lose their boot records but was able to fix them with recovery console.

Never had a problem with my Seagates though.

like it's been said before, all luck of the draw
i've never had a WD go bad on me but i've replace a couple of maxtors

I've had 6 WD drives in various generations of machines, none of which are dead yet.

Just thought I'd add that. I've never used Maxtor, but they only recently perform as well as the WD's, for years they were lower in perf. I have used an IBM drive but that went south after a couple years. You seem to have gotten a bit of bad luck, but I do understand if you'd prefer to change vendors. That's what competition is all about and its good for us the customer in the end.

🙂

And Western Digital is a popular brand name - a good deal of those rebate deals that I see seem to be WD drives. So with more of them on the market, you're going to see more failures of a WD drive than a competitor with a smaller market share.
