Cereal box: sugar puffs. Big black ants. I'm about 99.9% sure they're carpenter ants.
Hopefully, it's just a group of ants looking for a new place to establish a colony, or that have recently figured out a new source of food. Hadn't seen them at all in the past month or so since we moved in.

Grrrr... I'm not in the mood to play ant-detective to look for potential nests. Killed about 20 of them. Haven't seen any more. No signs of them around the outside of the house, and just had a hole drilled into the side of the house for a propane line - this is about where the ants are appearing from. I'll seal the hole tomorrow.

No, I scalded them with hot water. My tap water is scalding hot. I was going to just throw the cereal out, but realized that the sweet smell might be attracting them, plus there were a couple in the bag, I wanted them dead, and I didn't want to miss any hidden ones.

Those suckers seem smart... whenever I open the cupboard door, they'd freeze where they were standing. In the dark, they move around, but in the light, they freeze as if "if I don't move, he won't see me." And, it works... as I squash one of them, suddenly the rest of them seem to say "oh shit" and start scurrying. It isn't until then that I actually notice the rest of them.
