AWLTBT: Budget $800-900

That's right, Another What Laptop To Buy Topic

I do appreciate the help I've received over the past three years when I've had questions here.

My budget is $800-900 or a bit more. Depends on what everyone comes up with.

I want something that will allow me to play Starcraft 2, Diablo 3 etc when they come out.

15.6" or 17" screen is fine.
Core 2 Duo or i5
500 GB HDD
4GB DDR3

Something along those specs I think would work. I know TigerDirect has a nice i5 Toshiba laptop for $899 right now. Though I don't get paid for another 2 weeks. Commission was kind thanks to Christmas shoppers.

I've priced Dells Studio 17 and with EPP it's 979.00 shipped.

Thank you in advance anyone who replies.

For that budget, and these aren't incredibly plentiful yet... you will want a Core i5 (mayyybe i3) processor, and decent graphics. Please, for the love of god, don't get one with Intel integrated graphics. And don't get the 'new' Nvidia mobile graphics either. They're rebrands of old g92 chips even if it says it's a 300 series. Try and get a Radeon Mobility 5000 series. Not sure when availability will be good on these. If you need one now, I'd get GTX200-based graphics, or Radeon 4000 series graphics.

Diablo 3 is going to be hard, since i dont expect it to be out for another 2 years i would think you are going to need a top of the line card now, which will be a low end card in 2 years. I would look for somehting with the ATI 5000 series or GEforce 260M SLI at the lowest end for GPU if you want to play SC 2 and D3 well..

Thanks so much for the replies.

CurseTheSky, thanks for the links, I think I will go with the ASUS G51Vx-X3A. I can squeeze a couple hundred bucks out for something that nice...and gorgeous. I tend to be frugal is all.

Decembermouse, thanks as well. That ASUS seems to have just what you suggested for a "here and now" laptop. The HDD is 320 but I can drop a 500 or more in it anytime.

Rifterut, They should bring them out sooner! I think so anyway. Thanks a bunch 🙂

SC 2 i think will be late this year, I think we will be waiting till at least next x-mas for D3 though. Its not very re assuring when blizzards only answer to any questions about release date's is "When it's done"

I fully agree with you that they should release them sooner though 🙂

I was looking over the laptop and researching things. Seems that the G51Vx-X3A ca handle 8 GB of DDR2 even though ASUS states it's max is 4.
