Awful quality DVD playback

I tried out a DVD movie in my new DVD drive and it looks awful. Much worse then on the TV, more like VHS quality. It even looks worse then those quicktime trailers you can download. There's ghosting, compression artifacts, lotta pixels. It's just awful. Is there anyway to improve it? I've tried PowerDVD, WinDVD, and the version of PowerDVD that comes with my vid card. (MSI Geforce 2) I've tried playing with all the options in those programs too. I wasn't expecting DVDs on my comp to look amazing, but I didn't think it'd be sub-VHS.

Give us alittle background on your computer specs...

Are you getting jerky play?

If it is done right it sure as hell should be...better than a tv unless you have HDTV. monitor should look better than most tvs since it can taj\ke advantage of the 720x480 of dvd.

Sure sounds like vid card to me...what drivers are you using? Are they the original off of the cd?

Do you have direct x installed? version 7 or 8...sounds like it could be a directdraw driver issue as well...

No, it plays fine. I can even have plenty of apps open and it still plays fine. (DMA is on and such)
My comp: AMD duron 700, 8kta 3 mobo, MSI Geforce 2 GTS, Aopen DVD 12x, 256 ram, SB live, etc.
Everything has the newest drivers and I'm running DX8.

That system should more than handle playing dvd's flawlessly...

three things...

1) software issues... install vid card drivers then reinstall dx8
2) vid card is defective
3) dvd-rom is defective

Obviously something is f'd up...DVD's should play back with obvious better then vhs performance on most cpu systems using software decoding above 500mhz...some systems under that may need dvd decoder assistance...

Your geforce 2 has no built on dvd hardware to help this...

Are you running in agp 4x? What version of 4 in 1's are you using? May be vid card/ agp settings as well...

I gotta make it clear though, that it PLAYS fine as far as FPS goes. (meaning no skips or anything) It just looks like crap while it's playing fine.
I could give the vid card drivers/DX8 reinstall a try.
I've got it at AGP 4x, I'm running the newest VIA drivers from the site. I tried turning off "hardware motion compensation" and it looked a little better. Less ghosting and obvious artifacts, but still funky looking.

Are you saying some Geforce2s has built in DVD hardware?

how about my Elsa Gladiac Geforce2 GTS 32ddr?
