mercata has it at 181$ now and with the mercata$ program you can get it for 145$! they also have the sd2200 for as little as 205$ if you need a dolby/dts decoder. this sd1200 is perfect for a receiver that has a dts/dolby decoder built in. this drive has a rating of 4.3+ out of 5 by over 80 reviewers. at mercata (cant post the link, figure it out) under electronics and video.

The SD2200 only has the DD decoder, you'll have to get a separate DTS receiver (if it's worth it to you). Even then, $50 extra for the DD decoder and an extra tray seems worth it.

i was looking at this, but also at the philips 711AT for about $160 after using mercata $. The only differences are that it has optical out and can play video cd's, and is compatible with ntsc and pal. i don't care about any of these features, except the optical out. I've never owned any Philips electronics. Does anyone have this unit? Any recomendations? How have your experiences been with Philips (customer service, quality, etc.)? Does anyone know how it compares (quality-wise) with the other units in its price range?

I own this unit bought on a deal from Mobshop for around 150 before various rebates. It works fine for someone who just needs a DVD player and is not extra particular.
If you want to get the specifics on this and other systems from people who get down and dirty this would be a place to go:

I don't know if you can disable the "region" part of this Toshiba.

I was looking into buying a Sony Wega but they are so technical on that site that I became confused and just decided not to buy anything. Then a steal came along and I got the Wega anyway :)
