keeps the riffraff out I suppose. Oh and if you refresh it a couple of times you can get a simpler order of operations equation.

Damn, first I got one that was a third-order polynomial.
Refreshed for an "easier" problem. Now it's giving me a partial derivative problem. Damn calculus.

After 15 more refreshes, it finally gave me something without calculus, and this is it:

5-(-4)+0*4*(-3) = ?

Partial derivatives to basic arithmetic.

The people who would be requesting the sites services better damn well be able to answer the captcha questions, otherwise they should question why they are there to begin with :p

Exactly, If you understand why REAL random numbers are important and how to use them, then you will understand he captcha. If not, then stick with your pseduo random number generators.

Heh, now I have another answer for my students when they ask "when am I going to need to know math in the real world?"

I'll pull up this page for them to see and say "this way, they keep the riff-raff out."

I hate those captchas with the randomly generated sequence of letters/numbers. I guess they're designed to defeat simple programs that can recognize symbols, but they make things so distorted that even a human might have trouble figuring out what the symbols are and if they're lowercase/uppercase.

I'm surprised you guys haven't heard of theses things being called captchas, Haven't you ever had to sign up for something on the internet? Just about everything now-a-days uses a captcha of some sort.

isn't microsoft generating one where you get 8 pictures of either puppies or kittens and it asks you to identify the kittens?

That is a perfect Captcha for that site.
