AWD, how does it work?

I have some odd wear on my rear tires on my 2005 CR-V. I believe they are bfgoodrich Traction TA VR's. The front tires are fine all the way across. The rear tires are severely worn, starting on the inside and getting worse on the outside. I have read reviews of the tires and a lot of people complained of shoulder wear on these tires, and while one side is worse then the other, the whole tire is pretty worn. I just don't understand why the fronts are fine and the rears are so bad. Thought maybe the AWD had something to do with it.

I know that with AWD not all the tires are getting power at the same time, but I am not totally sure how it works other then that. But I was also under the impression that with the CRV at least, that it used the fronts first, switching to the rears if needed due to slippage. So that would make me think the fronts should be worse.

Any help would be great, taking it to get new tires tonight, but wondering if maybe there isn't an issue with the car in some way that is causing this uneven wear.

Oh I almost forgot the car has almost 22,000 miles on it. Like I said the fronts look good, with a lot of tread left, the rears are nearly bald.

Uneven wear across the tire like you described usually means your alignment is off. Having the front wear out before the back (or vice versa) usually means you didn't rotate the tires when you should have.
