What are your experiences?

Have you gotten stuck? If so, what kind of car and how much snow?

I high-centered my old DSM AWD in about foot deep snow once (the center of the ruts was hard-packed). That's about it. AWD in the snow is something I highly recommend. For a good driver, it's way better than any traction control BS.

Have yet to get my truck stuck in anything -- I haven't tried hard enough yet. :(

I drive a big Dodge Ram 3500, and in the winter I hardly ever use the 4wd on the truck. I do have a monster set of chains that I will put on if it gets real bad though.

Get front wheel drive instead of a flase sense of scurity.

5 years at Clarkson University where it snows 4-5 months of the year. I got stuck ONCE in a rear wheel drive truck. It's better to know how to drive than think 4WD or AWD will do anything for you.

Nope, I've driven my Wrangler through 12"+ snow without any problems.

snow tires?
No, just a fairly aggressive all-season tire (Goodyear Wrangler's). Having ground clearance really helps.

4wd will help me pull the 2wd truck back onto the road, though. ;)

snow tires?

They help, but arent needed in fresh snow though.

Driving in snow is easy. I would feel confident driving a honda with nearly bald tires on a road with a good amount of snow on it. Its driving on ice that sucks.

I wish we could get some decent snow so my BF Goodrich Traction T/As would have to work for their keep! I got them last winter and hardly even got to test their snow traction abilities except on my lawn.
