When you read sad news like this it makes you realize even more how amazing Hawking was to live so long with ALS. Was he able to outthink the disease?

Wow that was quick, at least given how recently it was publicly announced. Wonder how long he actually had it.

Yeah, I swear I read something just a few months back about how he was having trouble getting around but nothing that would have indicated that he was close to the end.

This disease needs AI to squash it, running calculations and theories 24/7 365 days a year until progress is made. There's obviously not enough money in it for the major pharma companies to fund human researchers.

I recall maybe 10 years ago listening to a radio show on a very long drive. It was some kind of talk show and one of the guests was a drug researcher. Many years before they had accidentally discovered some very interesting side effects in ALS patients who were administered a certain very old drug and they were desperately trying to get money from anyone for further research. But since the drug was a generic there was no profit possibility. They couldn't get anything from anyone.
