avoiding flame wars

I moderate a yahoogroup which mainly depends on the ability of people being able to post (via email) without having registerd first. although this group has, despite a bit of traffic, remained mostly on topic for a long time. flame has been dealt with in the past rather easily, but this week a bunch of people are caught up in a flame war, and the usual request to avoid flame are being thrown out the window. anyone here with experience dealing with flame?

edit: only prob is that if i ban one email address, these guys start posting with a fake email ID. tried ban and failed. 🙁

There's a difference between a debate and a flamewar. Ban those who make it personal and/or namecall (usually one and the same).
