I am slightly confused as to the hardware decoding provided by the video cards with these features. Say I download an apple 1080p trailer that is encoded in H264, will these chip help decode the the video or does it only help decode video from a hddvd /bluray source.

Well your support has to support the chip :!

They will decode both , just need to use a software that will take the advantage of the hardware.

Basically if the software used for playback doesn't look for and use the built in acceleration found in the newer cards, it won't matter.

Avivo HD and PureVideo HD encompass both the hardware and software elements. So, as said, third-party software from the likes of CyberLink or Ahead is also required. Given that, all standard sources can be decoded with hardware acceleration: BD, HD DVD, DVB, QT trailers, &c. Explicitly, x264 sources cannot.
