Avira and the stupid "license file"

I have this machine with Avira on it and it refuses to update. It just says invalid license file. I seen this before and it turns out you have to download this .key file off their site (what a stupid setup - the installer should have it included!) I did that, but it's STILL erroring out.

Anyone ever see this happen before? It's one of the things I hate about Avira, that whole license file thing, it's silly. Just update!

avira started refusing to complete updates @ 6 months ago, i struggled with it a while and throwed in the towel, mse now and no problems since.

I just switched to Avira AntiVir a month ago and have had no problems with it. I'm on Win7x64.

I am trying to reinstall now to see if it helps. I was reading about people having the same issues and that seems to have worked.

ACK! It worked, but only with the latest version, and it seems they found a way around the GPO trick and now the adware popups are at full force again. ARG. Not my PC, but I know if I leave it I'll get calls about it. I'll have to figure out another way to block those.

Why don't you just tell them they'll get a popup during update, and that it's a small price to pay for a first class A/V.

for someone that doesnt really understand how to deal with popups that could lead to false security sendrome, popups have to become a thing of the past.

Why not install Microsoft Security Essentials instead? Good detection, non intrusive, updates easily and no pop-ups.

Hmm that looks possibly promissing, I'll have to try that next time. The PC is gone now, the popup seems to of been a one time thing so maybe it just took a while for my GPO to take affect but if I get a call that it comes back I'll give that a try.

I used the following method (for Win7) to keep the pop-ups from showing: http://www.techspot.com/guides/213-remove-avira-antivir-popup-ad/. It's been working well for the past week or so.
