AVI, WMV's etc not displaying properly

I just finished FINALLY setting up my new computer and yet another problem, not a big one but an annoying one.

Whenever i play any avi's, wmv's, mpeg's etc etc i can see the video but it doesnt show the colours properly. one part of the video will be black and white, while the other parts would be filled with streaks of blue, red, green etc.

my system specs are as follows

Asus p5b
e6600
7600gt
2gigs ddr2 OCZ 800mhz ram
320 seagate hdd
lg dvd drive
liteon dvdrw
enermax liberty 500w
