.AVI to DVD

Hi,

I have a video in .avi format that I would like to burn to DVD and make it playable . Need recommendations on a free .avi to DVD converter. Kinda like converting an .mp3 to .dat (regular audio CD) but video instead. Or can I just burn the .avi directly to DVD and will my DVD player still play it?

I'm a total n0ob at this.

DVD players use the DVD video format (lets call it .vob - that's not the whole story, but good anough for a n00b for video.

Nero can make DVD video from .avi files. I am sure there are freeware which are just as good, but I do not know any.
