I'm having a problem playing some avi files, and it seems to be true for both my home computer and my work lap top (stock settings). In both instances, the sound of the files play fine, but no video. Most avi files play fine, but the files I can't get to play are files I've downloaded which relate to games, such as the Painkiller video (avi) walkthroughs, and the DOA vollyball videos. I know I've tweeked my home computer, but my work computer is stock (both are windows xp pro), and both have the same problem. I've had no problem with any other video format. Any help greatly appreciated.

In all likelyhood, you're missing a required codec. .avi files aren't made with only one kind of codec like an .mov or .mpg file is. .avi is just a wrapper that combines a video stream and an audio stream together. if you're trying to play these files and you get sound just fine but no video, then this is most certainly your problem.

You can try downloading GSpot to get the name of the codec you need to use to view the file. Or you can be lazy and get the Gordian Knot codec pack, which should allow you to view just about everything (beware that it contains the adware version of the DivX codec).
