AVI file works in Windows XP, but not in Win2000, how can I find out what codec it uses?

I have a large AVI file that worked on my friend's windows XP machine. He upgraded from win98, so I am not sure if the codec he used was downloaded, or if it was bundled with XP. In any case, I cannot seem to get the video to work on my computer, not matter what codec I download. Windows media player 7.1 will not download the correct one automatically either. Is there any way I can find out what codec with file requires?

Have you tried right clicking on the file and selecting properties ? that might help.

Have you gotten the more popular codecs (ie divx etc)

It it's not one of those, i think there is a way to find out. did this a couple of weeks ago for a buddy of mine but a little too much christmas cheer has caused me to forget.

But yes I believe it can be done...

Have your friend open it on his PC and get the properties from WMP. It will tell the audio and video codecs used.
