I just got a WinTV card and am trying to digitize some VHS tapes I have laying around. The WinTV 2000 application that came with the card works fine for small clips but horks my computer for long clips, several minutes or more. So, I downloaded Windows Media Encoder and it seemed to work fine; I encoded a 5 minute clip and it created a huge honkin' file 4 GB on my drive. However, when I tried to play the file in Windows Media Player, I was given an error message stating that WMP could not play the file because it's an unsupported file format. I can play other AVI files just fine. I googled this error and someone said to load the avi file into Media File Editor and I did. Viola, the Editor can play the file without any difficulties. I messed around with the options and chose "Move Scripts to Header" (I don't even know what that means) and it created a 23MB file that appears to be the full 5-minute clip that works with WMP. However, I feel that there obviously must be a huge amount of data loss to compress a 4GB file into 23MB. So is there anything I can do to view the full file?
Also, I'd like to burn the AVI onto a DVD to be used in a regular DVD player VCR. I didn't see any option to do that in Nero 6 however. Can Nero be used to do that, or do I need another application? Thanks a lot
