As I understand, .avi has a better compression than .mpg.
I have been trying to convert some avi files to mpeg-2. But I am bot getting the same quality. I understand that there is always a quality loss in any process, but the lost quality seems excessive, and perhaps I am using the wrong settings or parameters for my final mpwg-2 file (to be put on a playable dvd for dvd players)
My file is an avi container.
Media encoder says the video is XVID, bitrate 1013 Kbps, 624x352, 23.98 fps. Audio is MP3, 139 Kbps (VBR), sample rate 48 khz.
I have tried using Cyberlink Powerproducer, but it creates an incredibly large file with lower quality. Sony DVD Architect seems to fefuse to accept the file - soemthign to do with the sound format - possibly VBR. Sony Vegas imports it - but I am having trouble figuring out how to render it appropriately. Nero 9 trial is expired.
There are other applications I will examine, but in the meantime, how should a conversion be made? The bitrate of the video is 1013kbps. Should I select that same bitrate for the conversion? Doing that in media encoder, there seems to be a problem with the quality. If it should be increased, to what rate? I don't know what the compression rate is for the avi file itself or the video inside it.
