the card is a ati rage pro with video capture...i made a avi using that of a home video off a VHS tape. when i tried to bring the file (1.34gb ~9.26 length) WMP came up with an error saying that it didnt have the codec. because of its size, i wanted to bring it to nandub and make a divx out of it....it says the same thing, but atleast it tells me which one it is that its looking for: "Cannot locate decompressor for format YV12 (unknown)" since the other computer doesnt have the card...i dont want to install the drivers to get the codec out of em...and they are no where to be found (file name is not obvious as a codec). does anyone know where i can find this codec?

Prior to the Radeon series of video cards, all ATI video cards with capture abilities (TV cards, video cards with Video-In) had a couple of proprietary codecs with which you could capture. These codecs (called VCR-1 and VCR-2) allowed you to capture video with better compression than raw AVI. Unfortunately, ATI discontinued these codecs (and support of them) starting with the Radeons.

However, ATI does have a page on their site with a link to these codecs--although they are unsupported. Here is a link to that page. Good luck.
