AVG Virus Scanner Question

Hello,

I was reading a topic on a flight simulator web site, Avsim.com, that I found interesting. In a nutshell, the article slammed AVG virus scanner, the free version, as worthless. They showed a graph of missed virus' and while most of the top scanners missed less than 20 virus', they showed AVG virus scanner to miss 1123 virus'. The poster didn't say where the graph came from. I found that disturbing as I have the free version of AVG 7.0 on both my PC's.

I have read some reviews elsewhere on AVG and thought they had a pretty good reputation. Has anyone here had any experience with AVG virus scanner that they wouldn't mind sharing. As with anything else, opinions very wildly on what constitutes a good virus scanner. I just want to be well protected and thought I was until I read that article. Any feedback or recommendation would be deeply appreciated.

I guess it depends on who you listen to. You go to this link: http://www.anti-virus-software-review.com/ and they rated AVG pretty good, although it's the paid version. I would just like to have a reliable virus scanner, paid or free, that I can count on. I had McAfee, supposedly one of the best, installed and that didn't work for me. I tried to uninstall it and it left my system with so many error messages, I had to reinstall XP.

I run AVG along with Adaware on my rig and it seems to work fine. In fact, AVG caught quite a few viruses on a customer's machine with fully updated McAfee. It seems to be a good idea to run at least two scanners no matter what you have. I'm looking for another free one to load on mine, just to be safe.

While it is fine to have 2 anti-virus applications on your PC it is not a good idea to hvae both running in the background. IF you are worried it may be best to run an online virus scan once in a while.

I tried both Norton and McAfee. I deleted both of them because they used to many resocurces and finally went with AVG. AVG picked up 3 new viruses McAfee and Norton didn't pick up.

My point exactly, it depends on who you listen to. After I read the initial post slamming AVG, I ran TrendMicro and it didn't find anything. I guess a lot depends on different system variations and installed applications. When I tried to get rid of McAfee, it created such a mess with errors that I tried restoring XP to an earlier point in time. It got so bad the PC wouldn't boot up at all anymore and I had to do a reinstall of XP.

I like AVG much more than Norton (ran AVG on Win9.x, Win2k/XP boxes), however I nolonger run antivirus software, because I uses Linux and only boot to Windows when play games.

My friend was having issues on his computer. He ran norton, it picked up 3 virii. I got a hold of it and ran AVG, it picked up 27 more. I use AVG myself.

I personal like AVG
i don't think there is anything wrong or bad with the other scanners.
It is more important to be careful what you download and run on your computer.
