AVG virus protection?

Can it be disabled to benchmark or is it not necessary cause it doesnt hurt?

Yes it can be disabled,I just close it from taskbar,then renable it by launching it from AVG program in Start button,programs menu etc,unless you already have a short-cut for it.

I see so if its not in the task bar its disabled?

Just right click with mouse on AVG icon in taskbar and select "shutdown AVG control centre",this will disable it.
