$1400/40hrs = $35/hr

yeah, it's the avg of ALL non-self employed college graduates.
from those that just graduated to those with 20+ yrs experience.
from those with liberal arts/basket weaving degrees to engineering/software dev degrees.

but still shocked that the avg is that high.. $70k/yr

Pffftt.... $70k/yr is for the little people....

That sounds right. There are a lot of college grads working low-wage jobs, but the bottom of the barrel seem to be around $30-35k, while at the top end you have loads of doctors and lawyers skewing the average way up. The average engineering salary for a fresh college grad is probably right around $70k.

Take out the highest paying professions (Engineer, Lawyer, Medical) and the mean drops like a rock. I've also met quite a few college grads who weren't even working in the field that they went to college for, and many are still laboring in low wage jobs. I'd say it probably has more to do with their confidence.

That's about what I pay my entry level infosec positions. We have a really good benefits pkg. including a company funded pension plan.
