AVG or MS Security Essentials?

Neither of them!

MSE is not a real antivirus!!!!!!!

Avast 7 is the best free antivirus! its lightweight, and even has a sandbox option!

MSE coupled with Malwarebytes if on a desktop. If it's for a laptop just MSE so you use less resources/have higher battery life.

Neither, Avira. I like the Boot scan of Avast, but it is too much of a pain to get it working securely without being a pain in the butt.

I have seen MSSE miss too many things, and AVG has gotten WAY to bloated.

The problem with Avira is that there is now no way to turn off the ads it forces up.

MSE for me, I only go to safe sites I surf daily and only open email that I'm expecting. Haven't had a problem in years.

MSE 4.0 has network inspection now! weird huh. most people don't know how to setup MSE proper for a hibernating machine.

ie. wakeup laptop to scan - or update/then scan on first power on after a week.

So i tend to see a ton of unhappy mse icons. I create my own scheduled task to run it - so they can't modify it and tune it proper. Seriously check out the task scheduler it is 10x more powerful than the ui that mse gives you.

there is no excuse for MSE not running as soon as your machine powers up if it missed a previous run (like backups). Update then Scan asap.

MSE doesn't really do that for you (maybe now) but the last version certainly didn't.

corkyg says it all...........and to add to what he said, I have installed MSE and MBAM both on dozens of computer that I have worked on for people to clean them and to provide ongoing protection. The results have been superb on both removing and protecting. I've seen where the big high dollar sellers were installed and didn't do as well as MSE/MBAM combo.

I agree. I like MSE mainly because I can set it up and never have to see it again. Avira, AVG and a number of others are constantly popping up advertising something. And AVG is just plain annoying. I dropped it after 8 and went to MSE and haven't looked back.
