I'm planning on buying the Fry's duron combo special (k7vta3/duron 1.6ghz for $35, duron 1.8ghz for $40).

Assuming both cpu's are locked, which o/c better and how high? (i think the k7vta3 only goes up to 166mhz).

if they're not locked, then how high can it go?

THX

2 out of 3 1.6 durons I tried ran at 166. The one I settled with runs fine at 150, and posts as a duron 1800. Just try it, and see if your memory can handle it. Set your jumpers for 166. You can then try running a little higher, if your memory and video card can handle it. At 166 fsb, it posts as a duron 2000. If it's stable, I would stay with that. A great value for $35.

That would make the 1.8 have a multi of 13.5. Don't you have a calculator?:D They come stock with a 133mhz fsb, and a 1.8ghz Duron @166fsb will give you ~2250mhz. Not bad for $40, in my opinion.

i tried a duron 1.8->2250, no go :( (bios error checksum) but it did work w/ a pin mod to up the vcore

Yeah, Jedi, if that board doesn't let you up the vcore (cpu voltage), you'll need to go here. All you do is wrap extremely thin wires around the pins of the cpu, and reinstall it. That way, it's not "modded" in any way.

how high did u up the Vcore to?

and 13.5 x 200 = 2.7ghz if i had a mobo with 200fsb, but for $40 i aint complaining about a 166fsb :)

People with a board that will hit 200 have tried it, but the highest I've heard of from a 1.8ghz Duron is 2.4ghz.

well, i think the default vcore was 1.65v, so if you look at the pin layout i had no choice but to jump up to 1.85v (it only took 1 wire in the socket a) remember, this is on the k7vta3, which doesn't allow vcore adjust or multi adjust, just fsb adjust

default Vcore for duron 1.6 + 1.8 is 1.5v

wow.. 1.85. did u just jump straight up or did you try 1.7, 1.75, 1.8v?

oh wait... hahaha, that was a 2200+ i was playing with at frys to bring it to 2.25ghz ( 1.8ghz, 1.65v ). i'm sure you could use a wire mod or 2 to bring the duron 1.8 to 1.65v or 1.7v ( to make it stable at 2.25ghz )

That site only shows XP's, Thortons and Bartons, where does the Duron fall in those? (BTW, thanks....That is very cool) I have been trying to get my Applebred 1.6 to hit 166fsb with no sucess but I can only get the vcore up to 1.65 with this mobo so I am going to try a pin wrap 1.75 @ 166.

The Applebred Durons are the same as the Tbred XPs. My Duron 1.6 got up to 2.3 (1.85V on an NF7-S) until I tried enabling the cache which didn't go too well after a few hours...
