Just dl'ed and loaded the latest 8.0 version of AVG.

It appears to be a trial, and it says i will lose coverage after such and such days.

Is AVG really not going to be free in the near future?

I may have to look for the best alternative which is always talked about on the forum, just cant think of the name.

Avast, that might be it.

anyways, can anyone confirm that avg is going to be a paid for program only?

the popup and the link it took you to definitely makes it look like there's no longer going to be a free version. If come december version 8 isn't free any more I'll be switching back to Avast.

doesn't avira have better detection rates and false positives than AVG? i don't understand why AVG has 10x more downloads on download.com

Inertia... I believe AVG was one of the first decent free AVs so people used/recommended that. They've been surpassed for a few years now, but people still go back to the familiar. The only thing I like about AVG is the program graphics, the colors are pleasing :^) I use Avira, and would pay for it if I had to.

In my case, I think the cure (avira) is worse than the disease (potential virus). Not that Avira is bad, but I'm an advanced, careful user and have never had a virus, but I have anti-virus software installed just in case (AVG). Basically, I'm not worried about being infected and want something that will stay out of my way. Antivir will give an annoying popup every day when it updates. AVG will stay out of your way simply by unchecking "notify me of the update process" and bam- it's set and forget. I'm aware antivir's popup can be disabled but let's face it- disabled illegitimately. It'd be like disabling a nag screen on a shareware app that doesn't expire- the developers are hoping you will enjoy the free functionality enough to purchase the software, and the popup is there to remind you to (hopefully) pay. So you're pretty much cheating Avira if you disable the pop-up. If anyhone has proof of a recent email from Avira stating that they approve of popup disable, I guess I'll eat my words but until then I'll stick with a nag-free AV solution- AVG.

Haven't ever tried Avast but my understanding is they require registration. AVG doesn't have such a policy. I have PC Tools Antivirus and AOL McCaffee in my bookmarks as backup plans, but haven't really looked into them. Others like Clamwin and Bitdefender don't offer realtime protection (though I used to use those on low spec machines as scanners).

So in short, I use AVG b/c I like it's policies- it is nag free, registration free, and reasonably effective. Even though there are better paid solutions (kaspersky and nod32), I'm considering maybe buying an AVG license maybe once every few years- not b/c I need the extra features but b/c it's my way of giving a donation to a company that puts out the freest AV with real time protection.

I didn't read anything that would indicate discontinuing the free edition of AVG 8. Supposedly 7.5 was going to be supported through 12/31/08, but the pop-ups said 5/31/08. I am already running version 8, no problems so far.

I've got AVG 8.0 loaded onto my two windows computer (one Vista, one XP) and it was free in both cases. I've got no complaints with AVG, been using it for years now. Inertia would appropriately describe my usage of it. :p

Mr. Advanced User hasn't figured out one of the insanely easy, one time fixes to stop those ads?

I might recommend AVG to users because of that, but if I'm installing it myself (whether for my own PC or someone else) I'll always use AntiVir because of its better detection rates and the fact that I can easily make it non intrusive. In fact the fix is so easy I'll often recommend it anyways because only the most inept PC users wouldn't be able to do it.

I already said in the post that I was aware of the method to disable the popup, I just don't think it's fair to Avira
