I've been using Mozilla Firefox 3.0.11 and AVG 8.5.375 antivirus with no problems for a long time.
Note Mozilla's homepage with Google as the search engine is set as my homepage in Fire Fox's Options.

I just ran the AVG update. Now my homepage is set to some AVG/Yahoo Search page.
After it updated, it asked if I wanted Yahoo for my search engine. I did NOT opt-in for it.
When I use AVG's toolbar to disable it according to the instructions
Options/Advanced Options/Show Yahoo! search box on new tabs in the browser
Mozilla Firefox WONT open ANY new tabs when I click File/New Tab.
My true homepage which is Mozilla's start page comes up if I click File/New Window.
Disabling the toolbar doesn't help.
If I close the Yahoo search on the AVG/Yahoo Search page, I get a blank tab instead of the start page set in Firefox.

Old trusty form Firefox used to let me type an address, say, "Yahoo" and then hold down the <Ctrl> key and hit the <Enter> key to complete the address.
I could also type "yahoo.com" and hit the <Enter> key to get there.
With AVG setting my start page to AVG/Yahoo Search, I can't do that.
I have to type "www.yahoo.com".

I disabled OutWit Hub and OutWit Kernel (add-ons/plug-ins/ extensions). They updated last night.
Now everything is back to normal except typing my library's address with the .org extension WITHOUT the "www." doesn't work.
I have to type "www." AND ".org".
I used to just type labraryname.org <Enter>.
I CAN type some .net addresses as sitename.net WITHOUT the "www." and it works fine.
I'll try to enable OutWit to see if it still works or if that was the problem.

Wooooops!
I spoke too soon.
It seems that the correct homepage opens when I FIRST start Firefox.
Every new tab opened after that goes to that stupid AVG/Yahoo Search.
Disabling it per AVG's instructions prevents Firefox from opening a new tab.
".com" addresses work as always with <ctrl><Enter>.
".org" addresses don't work with >Ctrl><Enter>. They require me to type "www." where as I used to simply type sitename".org" <Enter>.

If I click on the icon in Firefox to go to my homepage, it does go to the correct home page.
If I open a new tab, I get the AVG/Yahoo Search page.
If I open a new window, I get the correct homepage set in Firefox.

Try this:

Disabling or uninstalling a toolbar or other extension may still leave preference settings behind that need to be reset. In your case, it looks like keyword searches in Firefox are still set to the AVG/Yahoo engine.

Try resetting preferences, either via Firefox's Safe Mode ("reset all user preferences to Firefox defaults") or try resetting just the Keyword.url preference in about:config

(In Firefox, type about:config in the address bar, find Keyword.url in the list of preferences, right-click on that entry and select Reset)

I tried ...
type about:config in the address bar, find Keyword.url in the list of preferences, right-click on that entry and select Reset
... but "RESET" was grayed-out.

First, try to Uninstall the Yahoo Toolbar from AVG .. You may need to completely remove
AVG in order to get rid of it. If you want to use AVG again, do it as a custom install or
if that option is not present, watch the installer for check boxes that need to be unchecked.

See here for uninstalling AVG Security Toolbar:

1885:
How to uninstall AVG Security Toolbar

Please download the current installation file of AVG from the Download section of our website, and run it to start the installation process.
The installation process recognizes the existence of installed AVG and the Add/Remove Components, Repair installation and Uninstall options are offered.

* Please close your Internet browser.
* Choose the "Repair installation" option.
* On the next page uncheck the "Yes, I wish to install the AVG Security Toolbar" option.
* Finish the installation wizard and update AVG.

This way the AVG Security Toolbar will be permanently uninstalled from your computer.

Note: Uninstalling the AVG Security Toolbar has no negative effect on the level of security provided by LinkScanner component. The only consequence of missing toolbar is an absence of some of the options, and less verbose information about the threats found by the LinkScanner component. The main settings of the LinkScanner component can be still configured in AVG User Interface.

Next please see this link and follow the instructions given.
