I was just wondering what the average temeperature was for a k6-2... i got one, and i was just trying to figure out whether it is too hot, average or cold...

it's 400mhz, and when i rebooted after 2 days uptime it said (in the bios) that it was @ 86 farenheit (i think that's 36-37C)... is this normal? or am i just really lucky? lol

thanks for the help

Sounds about right for a 400mhz K6-2, if it's got a reasonable heatsink on it. The K6-2/3 do tend to produce a lot of heat, the 550mhz one in my other machine is a cooker....:)

Yeah, but that's still nothing compared to a Thunderbird. I think the K6-X are in the 20-30 W area, so they are comparable to a Pentium III (only when it comes to power consumption :)).

I dunno, some of those K6-2s could give a low-end Athlon a good run for the money - I've got an original (PFH6035) Alpha on my 550, i'd guesstimate that it's well over 40c at default speed.....

I stand ready to be corrected of course :)

<edit - You've got to remember also that the K6-2s run on 2.4v default, and are built on a .25 micron process as opposed to .18 micron. /edit>

In my experience the 500+ K6-2 absolutly radiate heat. I have a friend who's 500 K6-2 ran at 50 C with the stock heatsink 2 case fans and a bay cooler installed.

According to the little program "Radiate" we get the following:

K6-2/400 (2.2V core): 22.7 Watts
K6-2/500 (2.2V core): 28.2 Watts
K6-2/550 (2.3V core): 33.8 Watts

For comparison:

Pentium III (Coppermine) 1000 (1.7V core): 28.1 Watts
AMD Athlon (Thunderbird) 700 (1.7V core): 38.3 Watts
AMD Athlon (Thunderbird) 1200 (1.75V core): 63.6 Watts

Dunno how accurate "Radiate" is though, but it should be right +- a few Watts.

and by the way: the K6-2's run at 2.2V core default with only a few exceptions (550 MHz model: 2.3V core). A lot of the K6-III's need 2.4V though.

it's running 2.2v core as well... this isn't really an OC friendly chip.. you might get 50-70 more mhz out of it, but for me that's not really worth it. lol

When i ran the thing outside of a case (when i was installing everything & borrowing a friends's PSU) it was about 76 degree's in his room, and when i touched the cpu itself (running) it didn't feel very warm, much less singe my fingers.... so i'm guessing that it runs fairly cool...

i'm considering getting a GW fop32-1 for it however.
