80mph? Don't do over 90 or else you'll be tempted to do more...heh...I'd personally take I5 down or 99, but i live in Manteca....

I assume your coming from Northern Cali.

For the most part its 70 mph (from salinas to about Atascadero) after which is 65..

those are posted speed limits. Be careful around KING CITY.. its CHP headquarters I believe.. or whatever they have a huge CHP thing there.

For the most part traffic runs between 70 and 80mph...

for 180 miles give yourself about 3 hrs .. you might get a bit bogged at the Cuesta Grade.

Im going to be in San Luis Obispo this weekend.. my friend lives there.. :) glad your joining Calpoly, its a good school, lots of beautiful women and handsome guys. My friends brother is still doing his schooling there.

There is not much to do there, but what's present is plenty..

Edit:

Since your leaving in the morning.. be prepared to see these buses with a porta potty trailing behind.. atleast that's what I saw when i went that way early morning in may.

Farm workers being bussed to work. They can be a bitch to over take despite it being a 4 lane highway (2 lanes per side)

edit: be ready to slow down near salinas/monterey speed limit suddenly drops to 25 in a school zone from 55mph.

Well, I don't do much driving north of SLO but south till at least LA it's all 65...bleah. I do 80 pretty much every day to CP without a problem, although that's usually a little faster than most.

Welcome to Hel...err, Cal Poly I mean :)

What's your major, maybe I can point out some profs to take. Also check out Polyratings.com (privately owned and operated). It'll give you prof ratings on a 4.0 scale as well as CRASH, an automated brute force class crashing utility :)

If you're commuting, parking can be a biaaaaatch unless you have early or late (past 2) classes...

It's actually 65 before Atascadero ... I can't remember where it changes. You're best off keeping it below 80 in most parts (where the speed limit is 70 you can take it above, but stay below 85 IMO) ... but there are quite a lot of highway patrol. Yeah, keep in mind that the Cuesta Grade is under construction (http://www.cuestagrade.com) so you might want to check that for traffic. Oh, and FYI the truck drivers are probably the safest drivers when driving over the grade ... they very rarely drive across the middle bumps, it's the idiot's in cars that go flying up or down it that will cause accidents.

Ugh, I travel that fscking grade every day ... I loathe it and it's bloody traffic.

Poly is a great school (#1 for non-phd offering schools on the west coast for the 10th year in a row) -- Housing is a tad on the pricy side, but it's a great area to live in with a great school. If you have any questions about the area or need directions, good places to eat, tour of the area... just PM me. I live in Atascadero, go to school in Slo, and work in Paso. I put far too much mileage on my truck

It is? I don't think it changes speed once between SLO and LA...
