Hi there,

I just bought an AMD X2 3800+ and is planning to overclock it.

What is the average amount of overclocking I should be able to achieve?

The details of my system:

OCZ 420 Watt
ATI XT800 GT
1 Gb PC3200 Ram
MSI Neo4 Plat
3 Sata and 1 IDE harddisks
CPU cooler = Zalman all Copper (large one)

I was hoping to get at least 20% or 2400 Ghz...is this normal?

I have yet to hear of one that does not reach 2.4GHz, so that could be completely attainable. You should give Zebo's A64 overclocking guide a try. It's a bit on the long side but it's pretty good.

my 20 minute OC, 2.5, haven;t tried for more yet, and I need Open case, until my XP90 arrives (today) or it goes up to at least 57c, and thats too hot for me. 52c open case on stock hsf 1.45v. Might even do more, haven;t had time to try.

2.4GHz should be an easy reach on the Zalman. People have been reporting 2.4 on the stock heatsinks. Maybe you could go as high as 2.6? You'll just have to find out. :)

If you get 2400GHz I will worship you until the end of time :p

I think I would be very happy to get 2400 Ghz given the fact that I only pay for a 2000 Ghz AMD X2.

I am just worried if my OCZ 420 Watt is good enough.

Chances are I will just go for the auto 20% OC from the MSI bios.

Does it show E6 in CPU-Z or E4?

EDIT: nevermind, ending in CD is typically a sign of Toledo.

I'm currently running 2.9Ghz @ 1.475 volts using an XP90! I'm overwhelmed by it's performance was only expecting 2.4 to 2.5Ghz.

Will do a full post tomorrow when I decide what combination of MEM/HTT/VOLTAGE etc. I'm going to settle for.

Meh..

On 1.475?

As of now I am calling shens..

Maybe 1.55v but even then 2.9ghz on air is close to impossible with the x2's.

OK, update on my OC. I got my XP90 today, so I decided to spend another 20 minutes trying to get a better OC.

Right now I am at 1.45v, 260x10 for 2.6ghz at 50c full load CASE COVER CLOSED (unlike before). I tried 2.65, but I think my PSU is limiting me (true power2 380). It didn;t lock, but wouldn;t even finish loading windows, Right now the 2.6 is ony proven for 1/2 hour , both cores at 100% F@H. If it goes down, I will correct my stats.

WOW  .. like you said you might PSU limited, 380 watt with a OCed 2.6 dualy.

You might want to check the stability of that OC @ 2.6 for as long as you feel fit .. and then if you think that you need more power to achieve a better OC, you might be inclined to purchase a better PSU, if need be

I just got an early unit end, so I backed down to 2570. Might still be PSU, but I;m not spending $130 for and S2 500 Seasonic to get another 10 mhz..And I'm down to 49c full load both cores at 2570.

I highly doubt it's your PSU. The only way a PC goes over 350W is if you have a dual core P-D oced to 4 ghz with 4 HDs + 2 DVDrw +6800 Ultra and are all being accessed at full load at once. Most likey its your cpu's limit. Cmon, thats a 29% OC, what more do you want?

Well Duvie seems to think there is a good chance, and I think so too. One day, I may blow the $130, just to see.
