What is the life of an average CD Burner? And do you have a link to that info? Thanks much.

It's something like 50,000Hours + which is about 100% of the time for just almost 6years (similar to the runtime or lifetime hours of HDs).

I'm curious why you're asking?

I was asking because I could get a 3 year Replacement Plan from Best Buy for 30 dollars. . .and was wondering if it was worth the cost.

CD-burners are cheap enough that I thinnnk the $30 would be wasted.

Go buy a bunch of media and some labels with the $30 instead.

I do think the extended warranty is good on large items, like big screen tv's.

I have a Imation 4x4x20 burner that I've used more than I should have over the past 3 years.. thousands of CD's burnt.. only recently has it started to show it's wearing out. I replaced it and gave the old one to my girlfriend who will probably use it about once a month to backup her design files ..

save the $30 and put it towards some high quality CD-R's..

Forget the $30 replacement gimmick. That is an old dodge - used for decades, and it is carefully crafted with solid statistics that guarantees the offerer will make money on it. (Business is not charitable.) If the offerer makes money, then someone else loses (statistically, that's you.) :)

In the wise words of Homer Simpson: "Extended warranty?! How can I lose!!"

I work at Best Buy and that's actually a service plan. That means that when you bring your product in for repair, the technician will determine at his/her discretion whether it will be sent to the service center (where it'll surely sit in limbo for 2 weeks before it's even looked at) or if they will just outright replace it on the spot. Besides, extended warranties are good if you buy larger things like bigscreen TVs or major appliances because those plans cover on-site service.

I would have to agree that you should spend that extra $30 on media and labels. CD burners have gotten really cheap (you can get them for under $100 now) so who the hell cares if they wear out? I've been using a Teac 6x/24x SCSI-2 burner (it still seems to suit my needs sufficiently) for almost 4 years and it still works like a champ. Of course, I don't burn 20 CDs per day like some people I know, either.

If burners cost as much as they used to cost, then I would say that it's worth it, but unless you pay a couple of hundred bucks or more for it, I would say buy some blank media. Chances are that if it lasts out the original warranty (prob 1 year), then it will last awhile longer and by then you can probably buy a new cdrw that is faster and costs less than $30.
