HUNTINGTON BEACH, California -- Police say James Owen Sullivan, a drummer and backup vocalist for the Southern California band Avenged Sevenfold, has been found dead at his home in Southern California.

Lt. John Domingo says the 28-year-old Sullivan, who went by the stage name The Rev, appears to have died of natural causes on Monday in Huntington Beach.

The Orange County coroner's office is investigating the death.

Avenged Sevenfold formed in Huntington Beach in 1999 and won Best New Artist at the MTV Video Music Awards in 2006. According to their MySpace page, the five-man metalcore band was working on their fifth album.

The band released a statement Monday expressing their sadness and calling Sullivan "one of the world's best drummers," and "our best friend and brother."

I did a search and didn't see this. Delete if a repost.

So what exactly are these 'natural causes' that we aren't being told? 28 is still pretty young for such a statement. I'd be interested to see what the coroner says.

They were really great live. I was waiting for them to return to my area so I could see them again.
This is sad news.

Let's get a poll going for this thread. Will there be more people posting in that have something to say about the actual event that occurred, or more obligatory ATOT "Never heard of him, I only listen to bands that most of the world has never heard of because I like to be different", posts?

Oh I've heard them and of them it doesn't change the fact they're terrible. Much like Ben Stiller and his movies.

I would rather not. But I see your point.

James was an extremely talented musician. That is a lot coming from me, because I always asked the question "What do you call the guy who hangs around with musicians? A drummer."

I'm a guitar player, but if I ever wanted to be a drummer, this is the guy I would want to play like.

I've heard of them. I would have it rather be Simon Sinister or whatever the lead guitarist with the guy-liner is called.

You know its one thing to wear eyeliner but to try and make it sound masculine by calling it guy liner makes me want to put a slayer album on in my car and drive like a murderous asshole.

You are a douchebag. Not only has this nonsense been routinely found to be stupid and not funny, you could have at least had the god damn decency to leave it out of an "RIP" thread.

I liked one or two of their songs and his drumming was pretty killer. You'd be amazed at how much they changed as a band after their lead singer killed his ability to scream. They were one of those few bands that went from playing shitty pop emo to making some pretty decent tunes.

I feel pity for people that actually believe stuff like that without any proof spouting naivety as their only leverage. It must be a pretty pathetic world for them :\

28 is young, that's too bad. I wonder if he had a congenital heart problem or something?

You're obviously not a musician. I hate their appearance, and dislike a good half of their songs, but DAMN Avenged Sevenfold is a talented band. They're one of those bands that grew up listening to Dream Theater and chasing that level of musicianship. 99% of the other bands out there can't play with the skill that avenged sevenfold has. Their drummer was truly talented and basically a virtuoso.

It didn't hurt my feelings. I just think you could have a little respect for a person's death and not just use it as an opportunity to show how "cool and unique" you think you are online.

But then again you are this month's troll-lite: All the doucheness of The Flying Pig, but with half the originality.
