I tried a search but the search here is trash.

Has anyone heard of, or better yet tried, the Avegant Glyph? It isn't quite a VR headset (like Gear VR or Oculus), it's more like a portable DVD/TV/movie player that instead of having a screen has technology that "beams" the image right to your retina, mimicking the way your eye naturally perceives light. All it requires is an HDMI input.

Apparently it's like watching a 65" screen in your living room and you can still see above and below the image so you can actually wear it and do the dishes or perform another task. You do get some light leak though, since it's not a totally closed system like the Gear VR or other VR headset.

It sounds neat; I wish I could try one out somewhere! Currently $500 from Avegant.

"Glyph"? Where does it appear in Unicode? :p U+1F3A7 isn't quite it, but it looks similar.

It's 720p and the reviewer said it's like sitting in front of a 55" TV. You can get a 55" 4K TV for the same price. The Glyph is only worth it if you want the portability.

They'll get there eventually, once they get rid of SDE & increase the resolution, especially if they add VR stuff to it. I bought The Martian on my GearVR & watched it (well, part of it, the resolution & SDE bugged me too much to finish it on the HMD) in a virtual movie theater, which was a really really cool experience because the screen did look HUGE & it was awesome swiveling your head around and seeing chairs & stuff in the theater room. Eventually they'll get Retina-quality VR screens & that's when the magic will happen for watching movies, using remote desktop, etc. The existing remote desktop tools are pretty cool (you can sit in outer space & use your computer on a jumbo curved screen & so on), but with the resolution being meh right now, it's not really useful for using on a daily basis.
