I just had a baby and purchased an HF 100 for Christmas so i can record his first Christmas. I want to burn blu-rays for the family and would prefer to retain the AVCHD file format.

my system, an HTPC:
AMD Phenom 8450 Toliman 2.1GHz
1tb Baracuda.11
4gb pc8500 *2 of 4 ram slots

I'm thinking that I may want anther 4bg of ram.

I've heard mixed things. My friend just built a Quad-Core for editing AVCHD from his HF10 (similiar to the HF100) and says it's pretty close to realtime when scrubbing. Personally I find it easier to convert everything into an "editing" format (I use ProRes on the Mac side of things), and then export to my desired medium later.

Are the 'editing' formats lossy?

Thank you for the help, your other posts helped me come to the conclusion that the HF100 was the way to go... that and I already had a 16gig SDHC type 6 that i never used on my Zen.

Is there a good page that i can red up on how to shoot videos well?

Depends on the format. There are a number that are "visually lossless", meaning they are technically lossy formats but visually you can't tell a difference. iirc ProRes falls into this category, looks just great to me!

As far as videos go, there are tips and techniques on Youtube and Vimeo. Mostly the keys are (1) use a tripod if you want a stable picture and (2) don't use zoom if you want it to look like a movie (99% of movies don't use zoom). Study the shots you see on TV and in films. There are a lot of sites like DV Info and books like DV Rebel to help you too!
