In America, back in the 70's - there was an animated series that had a Captain of a ship that was tasked with one mission - to save Earth from total destruction... That Captain was named Avatar...

America saw it as Star Blazers, Japan (where it began) called it Space Battleship Yamato.....

and now, it finally goes to film....

\our, Star Blazers!!!!!!

That could be, as strong as the series was, it still had major problems with its story line...
It was a World War 2 battle ship that flew through space!

As a 12 year old it was OMG that is AWESOME!!!

As a 40 year old it is ugh that looks stupid.

Any idea if this is even going to be released in the states?? Or just a Japanese movie that will show up in DVD only here?

There's been many attempts to bring Yamato/Star Blazers to the big screen over the years... Disney had a version, but it never got anywhere as they wanted to gloss over elements and make it a Armageddon clone...

Not too long along, some Americans picked up the rights to make a film as well.....

As for what I know - this film will be shown in Japan as a major release - then a dvd release later on....

I agree with this but I can't help it, I still want to see it. I have the first season on DVD, might have to give it another watch.

Goddamn - just got to watch this film - and it's better than I could have hoped for....

\they've combined some of the Comet Empire story into this film - and the influence from Peter Jackson and Lord of the Rings is somewhat heavy - however, if you get or want to view it - you may enjoy....

I have watched the film as well and based upon your statement "... it's better than I could have hoped for ..." your expectations were pretty low.

I was a big fan of the animated series back in the 70's. They used to broadcast it at like 6 AM on a local station and I would wake up early just to watch it (this is before we owned a VCR). I found the film to be tedious, the acting ridiculous (the actors reminded me of WW II kamikazes) and the central point not the story but the special effects.

I don't know why I am surprised/disappointed because the advent of this level of special effects has made it so easy to make bad movies focused solely on those effects and NOT a good story or acting.

They didn't show the Wave Motion Gun firing! Arg!

Someone please tell me this is eventually coming to America (or any other English-speaking nation for that matter).

The did show the WMG in action many times. It's the star of the show ...

I assume it will be fansubbed if you don't mind reading subtitles and technically not owning it.

You can get only so much for 22 million dollars, as has been reported was the budget for this film - and we're talking about a film that deals with the destruction of Earth and the quest to restore it...

Also with only two hours to cover an overarching plotline that the animated series had around 12 hours to work in... There simply was no way to hit all the great stuff that was in the series - the battle in the asteroid field, the final showdown in the volcanic core of Gamalon...

My expectations were low, as I knew they couldn't match what my memories as a kid were - however I really did enjoy what the TBS crew did....

and the Naoki Sato soundtrack - is excellent!

It is kinda hard to suspend disbelief at the salty looking Japanese captain, however.

Was the guy who played the engineer James Doohan's half Japanese brother or something?

lol...:) That was one of things that bugged me about the 70's series American translation as they made him to be a knock-off of Jimmy Doohan...
